NHR Wireless Climate Monitoring Supports Collection Preservation at a Dutch Heritage Museum

NHR is sharing a museum climate monitoring application in the Netherlands, helping a heritage museum protect sensitive collections without touching the fabric of its protected historic building.

A monitoring dilemma inside a historic building

Temperature and relative humidity largely determine how long a collection survives: excess moisture encourages mold and pests, while dry or fluctuating air makes wood and paint layers shrink and crack. Yet the museum building itself is protected — drilling walls to run cables was not permitted, ruling out conventional wired monitoring. Staff rounds and handwritten logs left records scattered, with nights and closing hours entirely unmonitored.

The NHR solution places S09 smart wireless transmitters with air temperature and humidity probes across galleries and storage rooms. Every sensing point runs on battery power and reports wirelessly — no drilling, no cabling, zero intrusion into the building — and units can be repositioned as exhibitions change.

From after-the-fact logbooks to minute-level alerts

Each space carries its own preservation range on the platform: readings approaching a threshold trigger a push notification, and readings leaving it raise an immediate alert, keeping staff informed even overnight and after closing. Awareness of anomalies moved from "found later in the logbook" to minute-level alerts, and gallery and storage environments gained a continuous record for the first time — objective evidence for conservation management, loan reviews, and insurance documentation, while routine manual logging was greatly simplified.
