NHR is highlighting a smart waste operations application in Malaysia, where bin-level sensing and AI-assisted dispatch helped the management team of a high-traffic commercial complex shift waste collection from fixed schedules to demand-driven service.
From fixed routes to demand-driven rounds
With bins scattered across multiple floors and back-of-house areas, the cleaning team used to walk fixed routes on fixed schedules: some bins overflowed long before the round arrived while others sat nearly empty, and coordinating recycling with general waste lacked any data to lean on. The NHR solution fits waste and recycling bins with smart laser fill-level sensors and collection vehicles with GPS trackers. Bin states return wirelessly to a management platform, which applies AI-assisted task dispatch based on fill thresholds and bin-and-vehicle positions, so crews collect only bins that are full or nearly full.
Fewer routine rounds, faster response
After go-live, routine manual inspection rounds dropped by roughly a third to a half, and the freed-up capacity moved to priority tasks and high-traffic zones, keeping environmental quality steadier at peak hours. Overflowing or toppled bins, once noticed only after complaints, now surface as minute-level alerts. Both general and recycling bins also gained a continuous status record for the first time, turning collection scheduling and recycling coordination into data-backed decisions.
