NHR Wireless Metering Helps a Taiwan Gas Utility Strengthen Usage Visibility and Safety Response

NHR is sharing a smart-metering application at a gas utility in Taiwan, digitizing consumption metering and safety management together — without replacing the installed meter fleet.

Existing meters become wireless reporting nodes

A gas utility manages meters numbering in the tens of thousands, scattered across alleys, street blocks, and building floors. Consumption used to be read household by household, with return visits whenever residents were out; the company saw only periodic totals with no view into district-level usage, and abnormal conditions mostly surfaced through customer reports, leaving safety response reactive.

The NHR solution adds S09 smart wireless transmitters to existing gas meters as field data-acquisition nodes, reporting readings at scheduled intervals over cellular IoT — no cabling at the meter position, and long-life battery power suited to locations without mains access. Key districts were piloted first before the rollout expanded to other service areas, with the meters themselves staying in place and gas supply never interrupted.

Response moves from customer reports to instant alerts

After deployment, routine manual field visits dropped noticeably. Meter reading shifted from door-to-door rounds to automatic reporting, freeing staff for pipeline inspection and customer service, and usage at each district and customer endpoint can be tracked separately for the first time, with peak demand and abnormal patterns clearly visible on the platform.

Combined with remote-shutoff support in the response workflow, the duty team can initiate a shutoff the moment an alert fires and then dispatch personnel for on-site confirmation — moving handling from "dispatch after a customer report" to "respond as the alert sounds," with every event leaving a complete record for later review and improvement.
