NHR Soil Sensing Helps a Taiwanese Vegetable Farm Fine-Tune Irrigation and Fertilization

NHR is highlighting a precision soil monitoring deployment at a vegetable farm in Taiwan, letting the grower steer irrigation and fertilization by the actual state of the crop root zone rather than experience alone.

Root-zone data as the basis for daily decisions

Vegetables are highly sensitive to water and nutrients, and Taiwan's volatile weather makes schedule-based irrigation increasingly risky. Overnight hours left soil conditions a complete blank, with changes discovered only on the next day's rounds.

The NHR solution places 3-in-1 soil sensors in the crop root zone, each probe measuring soil moisture, temperature, and EC simultaneously. The probes connect to S09 smart wireless transmitters reporting over NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, and other modes, with no field cabling and long-life battery power. The grower checks each plot's trends from a phone, with push reminders when soil moisture drops below its threshold and EC trends guiding fertilizer concentration and timing.

Overnight gap closed, inputs more precise

The overnight monitoring gap — previously 6 to 8 hours — dropped to zero. Early-morning dryness or post-downpour saturation now surfaces immediately, and abnormal-condition response moved from the next day's rounds to the moment conditions change.

Irrigation and fertilization shifted from fixed schedules to data-guided fine-tuning, and with environmental records exported from the system instead of copied by hand, reporting workload fell by roughly half — while the season-long record supports season-to-season comparison and cultivation review.
