NHR Radar Water-Level Monitoring Helps Flood-Control Decisions Start Earlier at a Dam in China

NHR is highlighting a dam water-level monitoring application in China, giving operators timely readings from a difficult-access measurement point, reducing risky field checks, and supporting earlier flood-control decisions.

A sensor takes over a high-risk point

Dam levels pull on both water supply and flood control, and when levels rise fast in flood season, every release or retention decision bears on downstream safety. This dam's measurement point sits on steep, hard-to-reach terrain, and readings had long depended on staff traveling out for periodic checks — risky work that was hardest to carry out during heavy rainfall, exactly when data mattered most. The NHR solution installs a non-contact smart radar liquid-level sensor at the point, measuring the water level without touching the water. Data returns over NB-IoT with no cabling or mains power required, and remote configuration and updates keep site visits to a minimum. The platform plots a continuous level curve checked against alert thresholds in real time, raising an automatic alarm as the water approaches or crosses a limit, and feeds the authority's existing reservoir dispatch system.

Earlier alarms, lower inspection risk

After deployment, awareness of abnormal water levels shifted from periodic checks to real-time system alerts, letting flood-control decisions start earlier. Routine inspection hours spent traveling to the high-risk point fell by roughly a third, lowering staff safety exposure, and the point gained a continuous, complete water-level history for the first time — material for flood-operation reviews and long-term dispatch planning.
